SPRINGDALE — Mason Hutchins burst off the edge as the ball was snapped, beating the offensive line and making a beeline for Springdale quarterback Layne Hutchins (no relation).

The Bulldogs’ junior linebacker/defensive end arrived with force, sacking Hutchins for a 9-yard loss and potentially a safety. The play encapsulated two of the main takeaways from Springdale’s second spring game under coach Zak Clark: the defense is well ahead of where it was this time a year ago, while a young, new-look offensive line is still adjusting.

Springdale controls its own destiny with two 7A-West games remaining.

Win twice and the Bulldogs (15-5, 9-3) will clinch at least a share of the conference title and the West’s No. 1 seed for the state tournament. Springdale closes the regular season by hosting Fort Smith Southside, which it beat 8-0 in the first half of conference play, then playing at Rogers, which it rallied to beat 2-1 in the teams’ first meeting.

“I’ve always wanted to go to a Division I school like LSU, so I had to mature and get my attitude right … Continue Reading ››
