Four writers rank the top half of the 7A-West midway through the season.

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer):

1. Fayetteville: The Bulldogs may very well be the most talented team in the league. Big-time playmakers on both sides of the ball should pay dividends against top competition down the stretch and in the playoffs.

2. Bentonville: The Tigers’ win over Fort Smith Northside could signify a turning point in their season. The running game finally stepped up and took some pressure off Kasey Ford. … Continue Reading ››

Four questions for four writers, talking 7A-West football heading into week five.

1. Finish this sentence: Springdale Har-Ber's 42-7 blowout win at Rogers High was                    ?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer) Not too shocking. Let me break it down. Har-Ber beat Owasso, Okla., 21-14 at a preseason scrimmage over in Tulsa. Granted, it was a scrimmage, but Owasso is one of … Continue Reading ››

ROGERS — Trey Smith started at quarterback for Springdale Har-Ber and he also caught three passes in the first half for the Wildcats. But Smith’s biggest contribution Friday night may have come off his foot.

In a scoreless game, the sophomore booted a punt 59 yards to the Rogers High one midway through the second quarter. The Wildcats then forced a three-and-out and they used the swing in field position and the momentum to score two touchdowns in a four-minute span before halftime to start a 42-7 victory over the Mounties in the 7A-West Conference opener at Whitey Smith Stadium.

Who will take the first snap under center for Rogers High on Friday night will most likely be a game time decision, Rogers coach Shawn Flannigan said. The Mounties host Springdale Har-Ber in the 7A-West Conference opener.

Starting quarterback Cole Evans suffered bruised ribs in last week’s loss to Jefferson City, Mo., but the senior has been practicing this week. Junior Joseph Sultemeier replaced Evans last week and has been getting extra reps at quarterback this week. Sultemeier also starts at receiver for the Mounties.

Sophomore Grayson Lee, who was Evans’ backup at the start of the season, is still sidelined after … Continue Reading ››

Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into the first week of conference play.

1. How many of the 7A-West’s winless teams (Bentonville, Springdale, Har-Ber) pick up their first victory this week?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)It wouldn’t be a surprise if all three teams win Friday. Southside always gets up to face Barry Lunney’s Bentonville teams, but it would be a shocker if the Tigers faltered again. This is the first time both Springdale teams have started 0-3 … Continue Reading ››

Conway scored 31 consecutive points to overcome an early deficit and defeat Har-Ber 31-15 Friday night.

A crowd of over 4,000 watched Har-Ber play its first game in its new $5.5 million stadium. The excitement on the home side continued when Har-Ber scored on its opening possession to take a 7-0 lead.

It was all Conway (3-0) after that.

“We told our kids it was probably going to take a series to get settled in,” Conway coach Clint Ashcraft said. “After that, we just started playing.”

Conway quarterback Breylin Smith threw for 349 yards, including 10 catches for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns by … Continue Reading ››

The final scorecard at Centennial Valley Golf Course in Conway made it appear that Bentonville's boys would have to settle for a second-place finish at the Conway Invitational Tournament.

That all changed after a 45-minute discussion, and the Tigers were able to claim the team title during Saturday's tournament. Bentonville had a 320 team score, followed by Conway with 325 and Little Rock Catholic with 326.

The talk centered over a Conway golfer that wrote the wrong score on a certain hole. Bentonville coach Kent Early said that his golfer, Nate Morey, called … Continue Reading ››
