Fayetteville Purple'Dogs must clean up mistakes with Wildcats up next

In recent weeks, Fayetteville (6-1, 3-1 7A-West) has reeled off strong performances on offense in wins against Bentonville West, Rogers High and Rogers Heritage.

Not only has quarterback Taylor Powell and his slew of receivers continued to make things difficult on opposing defenses, but the Bulldogs' rushing attack led by Terrance Rock has also picked up the pace.

Bentonville West Playoff talk begins to mount

Bentonville West — a team with no seniors — now has two more wins than many people expected the team to have in its inaugural season after a wild 42-40 win last week over Springdale High.

The Wolverines may have something else in the near future: a playoff berth. There are still four games remaining in the regular season, but talk has begun as West (2-4, 2-1) sits above four teams in the 7A-West standings and six teams advance to postseason play.

"I think that's a crazy thing for me to realize," West coach Bryan Pratt said. … Continue Reading ››

Many of Northwest Arkansas' cross country teams were scattered over a number of meets — and states — but many of them had good outings over the weekend.

• Rogers High's boys may have pulled off the biggest feat Saturday morning by winning the Crimson division of the Rim Rock Farm Classic in Lawrence, Kan. The Mounties compiled 108 points to 192 for second-place finisher Olathe (Kan.) South.

Senior Diego Contreras led Rogers with his seventh-place finish as he covered the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 48.20 seconds, while David Salinas took 16th in 17:08.30.

Siloam Springs finished 36th in that division, while … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville High Tigers attempt to reach full strength

Bentonville was without three starters last week when the Tigers completed nonconference play with a 19-7 victory at Conway.

Senior tailback Jacob Clark, linebacker Jared Ritchie and defensive lineman Jack Patterson were on the sidelines last week with injuries, and Bentonville coach Jody Grant is hopeful his team will be in better health this week for its 7A-West Conference opener Friday at Fayetteville.

"Having those starters out affected us a little bit," Grant said. "But that's part of the game, and we just moved the next man up.

"It's the same situation this week. We're hoping to … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville High Tigers hit road for first time Bentonville has enjoyed its first games at Tiger Stadium this season, but now it's time for the Tigers to hit the road. The first of two road games take place Friday night when Bentonville travels to Conway for its first regular-season nonconference game against an in-state opponent since the 2011 season opener at North Little Rock. "The opportunity presented itself with Conway this year," coach Jody Grant said. "Conway has been a real good program and well coached, and I thought it would be a good matchup for us before going into conference play. "We're looking forward … Continue Reading ››

Historically, Fayetteville has been known to produce state championship-level boys tennis teams, but coach Darin Phelan has that same feeling about the Lady Purple'Dogs this year. In 2016, he plans to send to the courts one of the strongest girls teams he's had since he's been coaching to compete for conference and possibly state championships. "I'm really excited about the girls program," he said. "We've got a chance to do something fun." Phelan has a solid group of returning players ready to make a run at a state title. Highlighting the team is his No. 1 player from last season, Cam Cupelli. … Continue Reading ››
