AN FBH-SDALE-FAY 10-11
Fayetteville quarterback Taylor Powell.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into the first week of conference play.

1. True or false: Fayetteville sophomore Taylor Powell is already one of the elite quarterbacks in the 7A-West?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)True. He may be close to claiming the No. 1 spot by the end of the season and there’s a good chance he’ll be the league’s best next year. Look at what past Division I quarterbacks did or didn’t do as … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-ROCK-BENT
Bentonville quarterback Kasey Ford.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into week five.

1. True or false: Bentonville has turned a corner the last two weeks with wins over Fort Smith Northside and Springdale Har-Ber.

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer) True. The Tiger offense has been much more efficient in recent weeks, a trend that should only continue as they roll through the easy portion of their schedule. The Fayetteville game looms large.

Paul Nielsen (Rogers beat writer)No question, yes. After … Continue Reading ››

FORT SMITH — Rogers Heritage never got going Friday night at Mayo-Thompson Stadium. Fort Smith Northside made sure of it.

The Grizzlies scored 15 points before the War Eagles ran a play from scrimmage and took advantage of four first-half turnovers en route to a 46-10 blowout victory in 7A-West Conference football.

Northside (5-1, 2-1 7A-West) put this one away quickly, scoring twice in the first two minutes of the game and turning four War Eagle turnovers into 24 points.

After Northside scored on the opening drive, Heritage (3-3, 2-1) fumbled the ball right back to the Grizzlies on the ensuing kickoff.

It took … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-NORTH-BENT
Bentonville running back Dylan Smith.

Four writers rank the top half of the 7A-West midway through the season.

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer):

1. Fayetteville: The Bulldogs may very well be the most talented team in the league. Big-time playmakers on both sides of the ball should pay dividends against top competition down the stretch and in the playoffs.

2. Bentonville: The Tigers’ win over Fort Smith Northside could signify a turning point in their season. The running game finally stepped up and took some pressure off Kasey Ford. … Continue Reading ››

1. Finish this sentence: Springdale Har-Ber's 42-7 blowout win at Rogers High was                    ?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer) Not too shocking. Let me break it down. Har-Ber beat Owasso, Okla., 21-14 at a preseason scrimmage over in Tulsa. Granted, it was a scrimmage, but Owasso is one of … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-HERT-SDALE FRIDAY NIGHT
Rogers Heritage running back Joey Saucier.
SPRINGDALE — Rogers Heritage senior Joey Saucier ran for a career-high 296 yards and four touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner on an 80-yard run late in the fourth quarter Friday night.

Saucier’s big day paved the way for Heritage’s thrilling 40-35 win over Springdale, but a key defensive play on the ensuing drive solidified the win for the War Eagles.

Heritage cornerback Jerrell Hobbs recovered Malcolm Neal’s fumble near midfield on the first play of Springdale’s drive and the War Eagles (2-2, … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville junior quarterback Kasey Ford.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into the first week of conference play.

1. How many of the 7A-West’s winless teams (Bentonville, Springdale, Har-Ber) pick up their first victory this week?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)It wouldn’t be a surprise if all three teams win Friday. Southside always gets up to face Barry Lunney’s Bentonville teams, but it would be a shocker if the Tigers faltered again. This is the first time both Springdale teams have started 0-3 … Continue Reading ››

Rogers Heritage football coach Perry Escalante said this week has a playoff feel to it as his War Eagles (1-1) will make a nine-hour trip to Texas to take on the Navasota Rattlers.

"They are a talented team and we're making a long trip," Escalante said.

On paper, the Rattlers appear to be a formidable opponent even though Class 7A Heritage has almost three times more students.

Navasota (3-0) comes in ranked No. 2 in Class 4A in Texas by the Associated Press and have outscored their opponents by an average of 57-9. The Rattlers defeated rival Coldspring Oakhurst 35-14 on Friday, but … Continue Reading ››

Fayetteville tight end C.J. O'Grady.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football entering the third week of the season.

1. Finish this sentence: Bentonville's 0-2 start is              ?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)Not necessarily a big deal. The defending 7A state champs have struggled out of the gate, but it’s not like it’s against in-state competition. Union (scrimmage), Kansas City Rockhurst and Broken Arrow are likely all better than any Arkansas team. The slow start does … Continue Reading ››

ROGERS — Junior quarterback Joel Brackett took the snap and took a knee on consecutive plays, then celebrated with his teammates as Rogers Heritage held on for a tough 7-6 win over Russellville on Friday night.

The War Eagles (1-1) and coach Perry Escalante were all smiles as they exchanged congratulations near midfield in Gates Stadium. A direct contrast from a week earlier when Escalante and his players were stunned as a late turnover helped Olathe (Kan.) North skate away with a late victory.

However, the Heritage defense came up with stop after stop, holding Russellville (1-1) scoreless in the second half … Continue Reading ››
