Thursday was a big scrimmage night at Springdale Har-Ber as four teams – North Little Rock, Siloam Springs, Bentonville High and Har-Ber – all saw action just eight days away from the official opening of the season. Following split-field scrimmages for the first hour-and-a-half, the fun really began, pitting Bentonville against Siloam Springs and North Little Rock with Har-Ber. Here is a recap of the Bentonville-Siloam Springs scrimmage: It was relatively clear from the jump Bentonville was too … Continue Reading ››

Cabot's Panther Arena during the 7A state tournament.

CABOT — I’d made it about 15 miles down I-49 on Wednesday morning when it hit me — I’d left my laptop at home.

My first thought as I took the West Fork exit and turned back around: I’m not going to make it to Cabot by the time the first game of the 7A state tournament tips off.

My second thought, immediately after: This seems like a terrible omen for how the rest … Continue Reading ››

FAYETTEVILLE — Former North Little Rock star and current Arkansas Razorback Anton Beard sat under the basket in Fayetteville's Bulldog Arena watching his high school alma mater play Friday.

North Little Rock coach Johnny Rice doesn't have a Beard or a KeVaughn Allen — another former North Little Rock standout who is now a Florida Gator — this year, evidenced by an 0-4 start against a tough schedule. But the Charging Wildcats are finding their footing in Fayetteville's Bulldog Classic.

Bentonville's defense had a reason to be tired Friday night. North Little Rock's offense wound up with 82 plays and kept the ball for more than 34 minutes in its Class 7A state playoff quarterfinal game at Tiger Stadium, but the Tigers' defense found its second wind at the right moment. Bentonville didn't give up another yard after North Little Rock had a first-and-10 at the Tigers 13, and that allowed the Tigers to hang on for a 28-21 victory. "Our defense stepped up at the end," Bentonville coach Jody Grant said. "We talked to them on that fourth down and told them … Continue Reading ››

BENTONVILLE — Tim Fernandez came up with a key defensive play for the second straight week and helped Bentonville hold on for a 28-21 victory over North Little Rock in Class 7A state playoff quarterfinal action Friday night. Fernandez, a senior defensive end, sacked North Little Rock quarterback Corvasea Cooney for a 5-yard loss on a fourth-and-11 play from the Bentonville 14 with under 2 minutes remaining. The Tigers (10-1) then ran out the clock, thanks to Jacob Clark's 16-yard run on a third-and-6 play. Bentonville, which hosts Fayetteville in semifinal action next week, led 28-7 at halftime. Logan Darby scored twice … Continue Reading ››

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Fayetteville scored 53 straight points en route to a blowout win over North Little Rock.

After going three-and-out and giving up a touchdown to start the game, the Bulldogs settled down and quickly regained the lead.
