CABOT — I’d made it about 15 miles down I-49 on Wednesday morning when it hit me — I’d left my laptop at home.

My first thought as I took the West Fork exit and turned back around: I’m not going to make it to Cabot by the time the first game of the 7A state tournament tips off.

My second thought, immediately after: This seems like a terrible omen for how the rest … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville outscored Conway 26-6 in the first quarter, and the Tigers proceeded to claim an 86-71 victory over the Wampus Cats during Thursday's boys benefit basketball game in Conway. Malik Monk, who committed and signed a national letter of intent Wednesday with Kentucky, was one rebound short of a double-double as he scored 36 points. Jordan Hemphill was the only other Bentonville player in double figures with 14. The Tigers led by a 50-16 margin late in the first half and settled for a 53-23 halftime cushion. Take away the second quarter, and Bentonville's girls had a very close game in their benefit game Thursday night at Conway. The Lady 'Cats, however, dominated those eight minutes, outscoring the Lady Tigers 26-13 en route to a 71-56 victory. The outburst helped Conway turn a one-point lead into a 45-31 halftime cushion. Bentonville closed the gap to an eight-point margin at one point before the Lady 'Cats put together another run to pull away. "In the second quarter, we just had too many turnovers," Bentonville coach Tom Halbmaier said. "We just didn't do a good job of handling the basketball, and it … Continue Reading ››

CONWAY — Springdale High has faced some of the state’s best quarterbacks this year in 7A-West action.

None of them had a performance like Conway’s Breylin Smith did Friday night in the first round of the playoffs.

Smith totaled 356 yards and six touchdowns in the first half as Conway raced to a 42-0 lead at intermission in a 42-7 blowout win.

“They got out to a very fast start,” Conway coach Clint Ashcraft said. “Breylin’s arm strength is very evident when you watch him. I’m proud of the way he played tonight. He was very accurate.”

Conway (6-5) outgained Springdale 450-158, including 411-107 during … Continue Reading ››
