BENTONVILLE — Bryan Pratt knew Bentonville West had to strike fast in order to put Cabot on its heels and keep it there.

It worked on the Wolverines' first two drives as Will Jarrett ran 5 yards for one score, then bolted 73 yards for another touchdown in the first quarter.

However, Cabot proved to be too much and went on to end West's season with a 62-34 loss Thursday during first-round Class 7A state playoff action in Tiger Stadium.

Cabot's veteran team found a way to get to Jarrett and wound up with five quarterback sacks, three of them … Continue Reading ››

CABOT — I’d made it about 15 miles down I-49 on Wednesday morning when it hit me — I’d left my laptop at home.

My first thought as I took the West Fork exit and turned back around: I’m not going to make it to Cabot by the time the first game of the 7A state tournament tips off.

My second thought, immediately after: This seems like a terrible omen for how the rest … Continue Reading ››

Devon Young had another big scoring night to help Springdale High remain unbeaten in a 43-33 road win over Cabot on Friday night.

Young scored a game-high 15 points and knocked down three 3-pointers, giving him 11 made 3-pointers in four games for the Bulldogs (4-0). Springdale overcame a sluggish start and a 7-3 deficit after a quarter by outscoring Cabot 19-7 in the second quarter to take command, then relied on its defense the remainder of the game.

In addition to Young’s big night, senior forward Kyler Mahar scored a season-high 10 points for Springdale. Cabot 6-foot-8 junior Matt Stanley scored … Continue Reading ››

Junior Josie Vanoss scored a game-high 16 points to lead Cabot to a 52-44 home win over Springdale High on Friday night.

The Lady Panthers (3-3) jumped out to an early 14-5 lead after a quarter and led by 12 at halftime en route to the victory. Springdale (1-2) was sluggish in its first action since losing 64-58 in overtime to Little Rock Central, one of the state's top 7A contenders, on Nov. 25.

Senior Desiree Mack hit two 3-pointers and scored a team-high 11 along with senior Chasidee Owens, but the Lady Bulldogs started slow and never got it going in … Continue Reading ››

Another year of high school sports is officially in the books, and there is still three more months before the next one begins. Still, it didn't take long for some people to look beyond next season, especially when the Arkansas Activities Association released the classification numbers for the 2016-18 cycle on April 30. These numbers — consisting of a school's average number of students in grades 9-11 over a three-year span — determine a school's classification for those two school years. The next cycle marks the beginning of Bentonville West and a consolidated Jacksonville-North Pulaski high school, marking some of the noticeable … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-CABOT-FAY

FAYETTEVILLE — Dre Greenlaw added another chapter to his big play career at Fayetteville.

Greenlaw, coined ‘Big Play Dre’ for his key interceptions and special teams plays over the past two seasons, turned his attention to offense Friday and sparked Fayetteville to a 35-14 win over Cabot at Harmon Stadium.

The victory for the Bulldogs in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs sets up a quarterfinal matchup with 7A-Central champion Conway.

“I knew they had a couple of plays (on offense) put in for me,” Greenlaw … Continue Reading ››

One of the projects I took on this summer (voluntarily, I might add) was to compile the won-loss records for every high school football team in the state since 2001, just to see what interesting information might be revealed.

Why 2001, you might ask? In my mind, it's the beginning of the 21st century. You may beg to differ, but let's save that argument for another time.

Anyway, here are some things I gathered after my project was completed.

• A number of high schools have already reached and surpassed 100 wins during this time, but four more will have the opportunity to … Continue Reading ››

In today's editions of Northwest Arkansas Newspapers, you can find my story where Bentonville is about to accept bids to put down new turf playing surfaces at Tiger Stadium and the Tiger Athletic Complex's soccer field. Both fields will be the traditional green, although I did tease athletic director Scott Passmore about a first of its kind field — gold with black Tiger stripes! Imagine something like that, if you will. I found one even a little crazier today. Diamond Ranch Academy in Hurricane, Utah, has a full-length logo between the hash marks that is black with gold diamonds (its mascot is … Continue Reading ››
