One of the projects I took on this summer (voluntarily, I might add) was to compile the won-loss records for every high school football team in the state since 2001, just to see what interesting information might be revealed.

Why 2001, you might ask? In my mind, it's the beginning of the 21st century. You may beg to differ, but let's save that argument for another time.

Anyway, here are some things I gathered after my project was completed.

• A number of high schools have already reached and surpassed 100 wins during this time, but four more will have the opportunity to … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville looked like the team it was supposed to be for the first 12 minutes of Thursday's scrimmage with Tulsa (Okla.) Union.

Everything took a turn for the worse when the Tigers switched sides of the field, especially when one considers some of the numbers during that 12-minute span at Union-Tuttle Stadium.

Those numbers include:

• 0 — the number of passes Bentonville completed in the second quarter, as well as the points the Tigers scored in that time

• 3 — number of touchdowns by Union, two of which came on plays of 45 yards or more

• 4 — number of times junior … Continue Reading ››

Here are the highlights of Bentonville's football scrimmage Saturday night during the annual Tiger Pride Celebration at Tiger Stadium.

• Junior quarterback Kasey Ford was 4-of-8 passing for 99 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He connected on a 40-yard pass to Ben Barron, whose made a spectacular diving catch on the play, and a 36-yard touchdown strike to Cody Scroggins on his final attempt.

• Senior tailback Dylan Smith had only two carries, but he bolted for 31 yards the first time he touched the ball. He finished with 37 yards to lead the rushing attack as 12 different players … Continue Reading ››

There were no handoffs for Dylan Smith and Hekili Keliiliki to take Friday, neither were there any offensive linemen to deliver blocks and provide holes for them to run through. The world of 7-on-7 football may be suited for offense, but it's not the style of attack that Bentonville's senior running backs prefer. The duo, who combined for 2,188 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns during the Tigers' state championship run last year, were limited to running routes Friday during the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase at Shiloh Christian. "I don't really do that much," Smith said. "This is for quarterbacks and receivers to work … Continue Reading ››

School is finally ended, but it's back to class for Bentonville's boys basketball coaches — on the other side of the world. Head coach Jason McMahan and assistants Brandon Cole, Bobby Stadel and BrianBpkZzwbCIAAUrs6.jpg-large Matchell left Saturday for Mali, Africa, to run a skills/evaluation camp. The four coaches will get to work with the top 50 to 60 players in a country that is, to put it mildly, poor. There is an abundance of talent there, but there aren't enough coaches to provide the training and skill development for these players. The camp is … Continue Reading ››

In today's editions of Northwest Arkansas Newspapers, you can find my story where Bentonville is about to accept bids to put down new turf playing surfaces at Tiger Stadium and the Tiger Athletic Complex's soccer field. Both fields will be the traditional green, although I did tease athletic director Scott Passmore about a first of its kind field — gold with black Tiger stripes! Imagine something like that, if you will. I found one even a little crazier today. Diamond Ranch Academy in Hurricane, Utah, has a full-length logo between the hash marks that is black with gold diamonds (its mascot is … Continue Reading ››
