FORT SMITH — Seth Acosta has become the latest defensive player to pour salt to Bentonville’s winless wounds.

Fort Smith Southside’s senior linebacker intercepted a Kasey Ford screen pass on the third play of the second half and raced 27 yards for a touchdown. It gave the Rebels a 10-0 lead, and it was enough as Southside posted a 10-7 victory in the 7A-West Conference football opener for both teams at Jim Rowland Stadium.

It marked the fourth time in as many games that Bentonville (0-4, 0-1) has not only committed a turnover, but the opposing team went on to score on … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-ROCK-BENT
Bentonville junior quarterback Kasey Ford.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into the first week of conference play.

1. How many of the 7A-West’s winless teams (Bentonville, Springdale, Har-Ber) pick up their first victory this week?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)It wouldn’t be a surprise if all three teams win Friday. Southside always gets up to face Barry Lunney’s Bentonville teams, but it would be a shocker if the Tigers faltered again. This is the first time both Springdale teams have started 0-3 … Continue Reading ››

High school basketball season is less than two months away, and Bentonville's boys coach Jason McMahan is still adjusting his team's schedule.

Moving games around is nothing new to basketball coaches, particularly when winter weather causes its share of problems, but this isn't a weather-related change.

McMahan announced earlier Monday that the Tigers have been invited to play in the 42nd annual Culligan City of Palms Classic, which will be played Dec. 18-23 in Fort Myers, Fla.

"It was just something we couldn't pass up," McMahan said Monday afternoon. "We will be going against some of the big schools that you hear about … Continue Reading ››

BENTONVILLE — Nunzio Campanelli would like to say the play Bergen Catholic called to score its final touchdown was done the way he had called it.

It was nowhere close, but it didn’t matter. It still did what it was supposed to — put enough distance between Bergen and Bentonville.

Corey Gaarn saw Emmanuel Appiah’s fumble roll into the end zone and picked up the loose ball just before it rolled out of bounds, and the team from Oradell, N.J., posted a 21-10 victory in Bentonville’s final nonconference game Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

“Obviously, you tell your … Continue Reading ››

Fayetteville tight end C.J. O'Grady.
Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football entering the third week of the season.

1. Finish this sentence: Bentonville's 0-2 start is              ?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer)Not necessarily a big deal. The defending 7A state champs have struggled out of the gate, but it’s not like it’s against in-state competition. Union (scrimmage), Kansas City Rockhurst and Broken Arrow are likely all better than any Arkansas team. The slow start does … Continue Reading ››

The final scorecard at Centennial Valley Golf Course in Conway made it appear that Bentonville's boys would have to settle for a second-place finish at the Conway Invitational Tournament.

That all changed after a 45-minute discussion, and the Tigers were able to claim the team title during Saturday's tournament. Bentonville had a 320 team score, followed by Conway with 325 and Little Rock Catholic with 326.

The talk centered over a Conway golfer that wrote the wrong score on a certain hole. Bentonville coach Kent Early said that his golfer, Nate Morey, called … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-BENT BACKFIELD
Bentonville junior quarterback Kasey Ford.
High school football seasons kicks off today all across Arkansas, so it’s time for some last-second forecasting about how the 7A-West season will unfold.

Here are 16 predictions I think will come true over the course of the upcoming season.

1. The Fayetteville at Bentonville regular-season finale will determine the conference champion.

2. Fort Smith Northside will finish third in the conference, make the playoffs for the first time since 2011 and post a winning record for the first time since 2008. … Continue Reading ››

One of the projects I took on this summer (voluntarily, I might add) was to compile the won-loss records for every high school football team in the state since 2001, just to see what interesting information might be revealed.

Why 2001, you might ask? In my mind, it's the beginning of the 21st century. You may beg to differ, but let's save that argument for another time.

Anyway, here are some things I gathered after my project was completed.

• A number of high schools have already reached and surpassed 100 wins during this time, but four more will have the opportunity to … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville looked like the team it was supposed to be for the first 12 minutes of Thursday's scrimmage with Tulsa (Okla.) Union.

Everything took a turn for the worse when the Tigers switched sides of the field, especially when one considers some of the numbers during that 12-minute span at Union-Tuttle Stadium.

Those numbers include:

• 0 — the number of passes Bentonville completed in the second quarter, as well as the points the Tigers scored in that time

• 3 — number of touchdowns by Union, two of which came on plays of 45 yards or more

• 4 — number of times junior … Continue Reading ››

Here are the highlights of Bentonville's football scrimmage Saturday night during the annual Tiger Pride Celebration at Tiger Stadium.

• Junior quarterback Kasey Ford was 4-of-8 passing for 99 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He connected on a 40-yard pass to Ben Barron, whose made a spectacular diving catch on the play, and a 36-yard touchdown strike to Cody Scroggins on his final attempt.

• Senior tailback Dylan Smith had only two carries, but he bolted for 31 yards the first time he touched the ball. He finished with 37 yards to lead the rushing attack as 12 different players … Continue Reading ››
