Historically, Fayetteville has been known to produce state championship-level boys tennis teams, but coach Darin Phelan has that same feeling about the Lady Purple'Dogs this year. In 2016, he plans to send to the courts one of the strongest girls teams he's had since he's been coaching to compete for conference and possibly state championships. Ah, the growing pains of a first-year football team.

Bentonville West, which begins play next fall, agreed to play a Sept. 9 game against Little Rock Central at War Memorial Stadium. There's just one problem — nobody consulted with Little Rock Catholic about it.

Catholic calls War Memorial Stadium its home field and has top priority over other high schools. The Rockets have scheduled a Sept. 9 home game against Jacksonville, leaving West coach Bryan Pratt and Central coach Scooter Register exploring other options.

Bentonville athletic director Scott Passmore said Monday afternoon he has 19 people that have officially applied for the new West boys basketball coaching job.

Passmore said he hopes to begin the interview process Thursday with those who have already applied, but he would welcome applicants this week from anybody else who is interested in the position.

Another year of high school sports is officially in the books, and there is still three more months before the next one begins. Still, it didn't take long for some people to look beyond next season, especially when the Arkansas Activities Association released the classification numbers for the 2016-18 cycle on April 30. These numbers — consisting of a school's average number of students in grades 9-11 over a three-year span — determine a school's classification for those two school years.
