The opening night of 7A-West play could not have gone any better for Springdale High. Both the Red’Dogs and Lady Red’Dogs took care of homecourt and moved to 1-0 in conference Friday with wins over Rogers Heritage.
Here’s what’s coming up for Springdale this week:
Junior forward Carl Fitch scored a game-high 14 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 4 shots Friday in Springdale’s league opener. Justin Bilyeu also added 11 points and 5 rebounds.
But coach Jeremy Price said his Red’Dogs wouldn’t have much time to celebrate Friday’s win thanks to a quick turnaround. Springdale heads across town to face rival Springdale Har-Ber tonight, who took down Rogers High 75-47 on the road Friday.
Closing games had been an issue for Springdale prior to conference play, but that changed Friday. The Red’Dogs shot a perfect 5 of 5 from the floor in the fourth quarter and held Heritage to just 2 points on 1 of 14 shooting to preserve a 45-33 win.
Springdale will then travel to Bentonville West Friday, who won its first ever 7A-West game Saturday against Van Buren, 50-39.
Sophomore Marquesha Davis put on the performance of the first night of conference play with 25 points, 16 rebounds and 4 steals in a 63-39 win against Heritage.
In all, nine players scored and Springdale’s pressure defense forced 26 turnovers in the win.
Coach Heather Hunsucker hopes Davis has another big-time game in her as Springdale faces Har-Ber on the road tonight. Har-Ber fell 54-52 at Rogers Friday, but Hunsucker knows when the cross-town rivals get together anything can happen.
Springdale faces Bentonville West to end the week. West fell at home to Van Buren Saturday behind guard Jamilyn Kinney’s 20 points.
