Southside’s Johnson Earns Player of the Week Honors

Fort Smith Southside quarterback Cooper Johnson is the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Player of the Week after running for a career-high 224 yards on 31 carries and scoring the game-winning touchdown in Southside’s 22-15 victory over rival Fort Smith Northside.

Johnson’s 32-yard touchdown run with 3:29 left gave Southside the lead for good and completed a second-half comeback after it trailed 15-7 inside the final minute of the third quarter. Johnson also completed 5 of 8 passes for 50 yards and threw for a key two-point conversion, helping lead the way as Southside beat the Grizzlies for the 11th straight time.

Johnson has been one of the better quarterbacks in the 7A-West this season, accounting for more than 2,500 yards of total offense and 22 touchdowns. He’s thrown for 1,872 yards and 14 touchdowns while running for 651 yards and eight touchdowns. Both rushing stats easily lead 7A-West quarterbacks.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Brayden Burnett, West Fork: He ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries as West Fork beat Greenland 18-13 to win the 3A-1 Conference title.

Jordan Burnett, Gravette: Burnett ran for 179 yards and three scores in a 34-30 win over Gentry. His 4-yard run with 2:20 left was the go-ahead touchdown and eventual game-winner.

Fuller Chandler, Springdale Har-Ber: Chandler completed 13 of 18 passes for 173 yards and four touchdowns while adding a touchdown run in Har-Ber’s 41-0 win over Rogers Heritage as the Wildcats clinched their first outright conference title.

Isaac Disney, Prairie Grove: Disney had 135 receiving yards and three toucdowns in the Tigers’ 62-20 win over Lincoln, a victory that helped clinch the 4A-1 Conference title.

Sean Michael Flanigan, Charleston: Flanigan returned two interceptions for touchdowns and also caught a 67-yard touchdown pass as the Tigers routed Mansfield 60-19.

Kam’ron Mays-Hunt, Bentonville: Mays-Hunt caught a career-high 12 passes for 83 yards in Bentonville’s 37-26 road win at Fayetteville.

Tyson Morris, Fayetteville: Morris caught 10 passes for 165 yards in Fayetteville’s loss to Bentonville.

Connor Reece, Shiloh Christian: Reece completed 30 of 45 passes for 416 yards and three touchdowns in Shiloh’s loss to Pea Ridge.

CJ Taylor, Gentry: Taylor ran for 146 yards and four touchdowns on just 18 carries in a loss to Gravette.
