COACH: Steve Peck.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 14-8 overall, 7-7 7A-West.

KEY PERFORMERS: Willie Hernandez (Jr.), Alex Valdez (Sr.), Juan Sanchez (Jr.), Jose Almarez (Sr.), Horacio Olivera (Sr.), Alex Balderas (Sr.), Jessie Ramirez (Sr.), Cobi Rivera (Sr.).

TOP NEWCOMERS: Nelson Rivas (Soph.), Esteban Chavez (Soph.).

THE SKINNY: Peck is returning from double bypass surgery around the first of the year, but he’s excited about a strong returning nucleus with eight starters (six seniors). The Mounties have lost in the semifinals to the eventual state champion in five of the last eight years, but Peck believes this could be the year for his team to break through. Ramirez is a returning all-state performer at forward, while Balderas and Olivera were also all-staters in the midfield. But sophomore keeper Esteban Chavez is the really the lone unknown in a solid lineup.
