Rogers 43, Springdale 42

ROGERS — Sophomore Jeb Brain’s 20-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion with 52 seconds left lifted Rogers High to a thrilling 43-42 win over Springdale High in the season finale for both teams Friday.

A last-second Springdale pass fell incomplete in the end zone as the Mounties hung on for the victory.

Rogers (2-8, 1-6) avoided a last-place finish with the win, while the Bulldogs (0-10, 0-7) dropped their 13th straight game dating back to last year.

Springdale junior quarterback Fuller Chandler threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs back from a 28-0 deficit late in the first half. Springdale scored four touchdowns in less than eight minutes of game time spanning the second and third quarter, then took a 35-28 lead on Chandler’s 9-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

Chandler broke a tie again when he found junior Hunter Necessary for a 19-yard touchdown, the duo’s second touchdown connection on the night, to give the Bulldogs a 42-35 lead with 4:59 left.

Rogers senior Bryan Grigsby ran for 242 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries and excelled late in the game as the Mounties responded after blowing the big lead.

  • Springdale finished with its first winless season since going 0-0-3 in 1916.
  • Rogers missed the playoffs for the first time in three years, but ended the season on a high note.
  • Rogers sophomore Joel Carrasco came up with a key interception in the third quarter after Springdale started a drive in Rogers territory up 35-28 with all the momentum.
  • Springdale senior Zach Burton caught eight passes for a career-high 143 yards, the third straight game he either tied or broke his career-high.
