The Purple Bulldogs return all but three from last year’s team, which finished just one point out of the top 10 in the Class 6A-7A state tournament. But they are still relatively young with just three seniors this year.

“We’ve got kids working hard and trying to pay attention to basic details,” said West, who led Springdale Har-Ber to state team titles in 2012 and 2016. “Guys are learning and being coachable. We’ve taken huge steps to get to where we want to be.”

Senior Brady Arroyos is the lone returning medalist. He finished third at 138 pounds. His brother, Bryce, who graduated, claimed the state title at 132.

West is unsure what weight class Brady Arroyos will be in, but will likely bump up.

“He’s practiced hard in the summer and starting to make some strides,” West said. “He’s one who is becoming coachable and get the bigger picture. We’ve focused on the weight room and gotten a lot stronger in the last year.”

Seniors Nate Simowitz and Cody Williamson are both primed for big seasons, West said. Simowitz is coming off a rotator cuff injury, while Williamson was one win from a medal last year.

Williamson recently signed to wrestle at Ouachita Baptist University.

“Nate has just been cleared a few weeks ago and he looks determinted,” West said. “I correlate wrestling with helping Cody mature. He beat a kid in the state tournament that had beat him three times.”

Matthew Muller is another, who was one win from a medal at the state tournament. Freshman Abigail Fimbres is Fayetteville’s first female wrestler.

Fayetteville’s varsity will open Dec. 2 in Gardner, Kan.
