Prep Wrestling Bentonville West team preview

Stephen Fox from Bentonville High School, (grey jersey) and Ben Bickle from Rogers High, compete Saturday, December 19, 2015 in the championship match in the 113 pound division at the Bentonville High School wrestling tournament.

Bentonville West wrestling coach Aaron Wise believes his Wolverines will surprise some people in just their second year.

West finished in the top 10 at the Class 6A-7A state tournament in its inaugural season without a senior on the roster. But Wise is looking for even bigger things.

Zackery Ireland, the defending state champion at 106, returns along with brothers Stephen and Walker Fox. Both finished second — Walker at 113 and Stephen at 126. But freshman Jake Adams moved in from Vian, Okla., and only fortifies the Wolverines’ lower weights. He’s the son of assistant coach Jason Adams.

Wise said the younger Adams definitely adds to the lineup, but the elder one has helped the entire team, too.

“Jason started the program at Vian and took them to the state finals,” Wise said. “He’s been so helpful with great ideas how to drill and incorporate technique.

“Jake’s been very successful in Oklahoma. He’s a junior high youth state champion and earned All-American preseason nationals. He’s pretty dang tough.”

There’s no question West’s lower weights will be strong, but the Wolverines could surprise in other areas,” Wise said.

Connor Klein missed the state tournament because of an injury last year, but should be back strong, Wise said.
