The Two Sides Of Celebration

Bentonville's softball players had the right to be a little giddy after Tuesday's big game at the Tiger Athletic Complex. The celebration was on moments after Lady Tigers claimed a 4-2 victory over Van Buren. They had just won the 7A/6A-West Conference championship in a game coach Kent Early called "a heavyweight battle" and earned the league's No. 1 seed in the Class 7A State Tournament. The Bentonville players formed a big group outside their dugout, and it was all fun and games as they gathered behind Morgan Vaughan and Emma Kinsey as they were being interviewed by an area television reporter. … Continue Reading ››

Back in the days when I played sports, and dinosaurs frolicked on the prairie, surgeries to the knees and elbows were considered career-ending. If you blew an ACL, your athletic career was done. Forever.
Tommy John
This illustration shows how ulnar collateral ligament, or Tommy John surgery is performed.
I played baseball only through the age of 15 because we didn't have a high school program back then at the tiny school I attended. I played men's softball for many years. I never personally knew anyone who had ulnar collateral ligament surgery, … Continue Reading ››

Meet Of Champs Field Announced

The Arkansas Activities Association has released the participants for the Meet of Champs, which will be held Saturday afternoon in Heber Springs. Here are the Northwest Arkansas entries, as well as what I think you should expect for each event: • Girls pole vault — Jade Donnell and Isabel Neal of Bentonville and Rylee Robinson of Shiloh Christian are among the participants, but this event belongs to Lexi Weeks of Cabot. Weeks set the overall record at 13 feet, 6 1/2 inches last week at the Class 7A state meet and barely missed clearing 14 feet. • Boys shot put — Blake Young … Continue Reading ››

Farmington freshman Tyler Gregg allowed just 2 hits and struck out 10 in the Cardinals' 4-0 win against Pottsville on Saturday.
History could be made Monday in Lincoln in the finals of the 4A-North Regional Tournament. Farmington vs. Prairie Grove, a longtime rivalry that seemingly dates back to the Prairie Grove Civil War battle, will go at it possibly for the last time in a meaningful athletic contest at 2:30 p.m. The winner earns the No. 1 seed from the regional at next week's 4A State Tournament … Continue Reading ››

Are Coach Ejections Ever A Good Thing?

We've all seen them at one time or another. A coach, fired up over a blown call, has finally had enough and let's the referee or official have a piece of his mind. The official then reacts by throwing the coach out of the game, the arena, the stadium, wherever the field might be. And this usually leads to a big crowd reaction, a coach storming off the scene and a heated situation that is usually talked about in the local schools, papers, radio stations, TVs and barber shops for days to come. These coaching ejections are often frowned upon by many. … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville Makes MaxPreps Cup’s Top 10

One of my Twitter followers, Kurt Wayne, steered me Thursday night toward a story done late last month by concerning the MaxPreps Cup standings. Bentonville is ranked No. 10 in the MaxPreps Cup rankings, which  are compiled by giving schools points for a first- or second-place finish at the state level. There are some stipulations — a championship is worth more points for schools in higher classifications, schools in states with higher population get more points than those in lesser populated states, and a sport such as football gets more points than a sport such as tennis. The article, written by MaxPreps … Continue Reading ››
