— Hurricane Isaac is throwing a wrench in the opening-week plans of several football teams across Arkansas.

Multiple state colleges and high schools began rescheduling football games on Tuesday in preparation for the remnants of the storm reaching the state later this week. Isaac, a Category 1 hurricane, made landfall late Tuesday night in Louisiana and moved into south Arkansas early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, Isaac could bring winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour to the state with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. The heavy rains associated with the storm will present the possibility of flash flooding and river flooding.

"There will be heavy rains just to the east of where Isaac ends up in the state, which is still the cause for some debate," said National Weather Service meteorologist John Robinson. "Some areas will almost certainly receive six or more inches of rain.

"Drought is almost always ended by floods. I'm not saying this will end the drought, but it will put a dent in it in our state."

The threat of tornadoes is also possible. National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Buonanno said a small supercell thunderstorm can develop in tropical storm bands and produce tornadoes so quickly that in some cases it won’t be possible to issue tornado warnings.

The Great American Conference allowed Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist to reschedule their season-openers from Thursday to Wednesday in Arkadelphia. Both teams won.

At least 26 high school football games have been rescheduled because of the storm. Those games are listed below.
