LITTLE ROCK An interception by Emmanuel Cooper and and fumble recovery by Kenneth Lewis both led to fourth quarter touchdowns to break a tie and were the deciding factor in Arkandelphia's 42-28 victory over Benton in the First Security Classic at War Memorial Stadium.
Knotted at 28-28 with 8:01 left in the game, Cooper tipped and picked off a Tarek Beaugard pass at the Panthers' (0-1) 11-yard line and returned it to the 2. One play later, Kris Oliver dove in for the score to put the Badgers (1-0) up for good.
On the ensuing kickoff, Benton failed to recover a pooch kick, allowing Lewis to jump on the ball at the Panthers' 25. Arkadelphia would score on the ensuing drive and cap the scoring.
Quarterback Jakahari Howell was named game MVP.
