QUARTERBACK LEADS STRONG WAR EAGLES BACKFIELD

Senior running back John Stotts suffered a knee injury in the first half of Rogers Heritage’s season opener a year ago and played only sparingly the rest of the season.

POSITION BATTLE: BACKFIELD

The Skinny

Watch Out For: Junior running back Brandon Gates. He started last season as a receiver, but moved into the backfield more as the season progressed. Gates has added 15 to 20 pounds in the offseason and has not lost a step, which should make him tough to bring down.

Biggest Strength: Quarterback Josh Qualls returns after passing for just a shade under 2,500 yards and 24 touchdowns as a sophomore starter in the 7A-West Conference. The 6-foot, 170-pound junior also has quickness to make something happen with his feet when protection breaks down.

Biggest Question: The War Eagles’ running game never really got off the ground last season when senior John Stotts was injured in the first half of the season opener. Gates should give Heritage a strong runner, but if he’s injured the War Eagles’ depth could be tested again.
