Fayetteville junior quarterback Taylor Powell is the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Player of the Week after putting together one of the best performances in program history in Fayetteville’s 46-19 win at Fort Smith Northside.
Powell completed 21 of 30 passes for a career-high 423 yards and four touchdowns and added a touchdown run. The 423 yards rank fifth all-time in Fayetteville’s single-game record books.
He found Bruce Armstrong for a 72-yard score and hit Tyson Morris for a 28-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs an early lead. He then found Morris again on a 44-yard Hail Mary with a second left in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 24-11 lead at intermission.
Powell’s 1-yard run late in the third quarter extended the lead to 31-19, then he found Morris for a third score, again from 44 yards, in the fourth quarter to help put the game out of reach.
Powell has been very accurate and put up big numbers despite Friday being the first time he played into the fourth quarter of a game this season. Through four weeks, he has thrown for 1,192 yards with 16 touchdowns and just two interceptions while completing nearly 75 percent of his passes in Fayetteville’s impressive 4-0 start.
