THE SKINNY
Senior Maggie Mabry returns on the mound after logging a team-high 56.1 innings with 33 strikeouts and only 12 walks. She didn’t allow any earned runs in five innings against Siloam Springs on Thursday. Mabry is joined in the pitcher’s circle by senior Abby Richardson and Emily Megee, a freshman. “They’re all similar and move the ball in and out as opposed to up and down. They’re more location, control-type pitchers,” Shirey said. … Andrews is one of four returning starters, but moves to third base to catcher. She bats clean-up and hit a 3-run double in the opener, a 12-1 win at Siloam Springs. … Morgan Stratton, who was 2 for 3 against Siloam Springs, bats leadoff and starts in center field. “We’re hoping she has a good year. She can run and is an athlete, but just doesn’t have a lot of softball experience,” Shirey said. … Katie Beth Ezell returns at first base and Emily Lyles plays shortstop. … Freshmen Shalin Charles and Sadie Baxter will contribute at third base and in the outfield, respectively. … “We have a lot of new faces, so it’s going to be a process,” Shirey said. “It’s going to be a maturation process for the young kids and players in new positions as far as understanding and making plays and giving us a chance to compete by showing up every night, not giving up and playing hard.”
