Springdale dipped into the junior-high ranks of another Class 7A school district to fill its varsity volleyball coaching opening Monday.

The Lady Bulldogs hired Megan Thompson, a two-time state champion as a player for Fort Smith Southside and the coach of Kimmons Junior High in Fort Smith for the past five years, to fill the void left by Kylie Moad’s resignation in mid-April.

The defending champion was down in the fall, but it’s not out yet.

Bentonville, who was unranked in the MaxPreps Cup standings when the fall sports were completed, vaulted itself to the No. 6 spot after the winter sports were finished and is within striking distance of winning that title a third consecutive year. Shiloh Christian extended its conference win streak to 35 straight matches after its 3-0 sweep of Pea Ridge on Tuesday in Champions Gymnasium.

The Lady Saints have not lost a conference match since their first season in the 5A-West three years ago. The team swept the 5A-West in 2013 and swept the 4A-1 Conference last season. Tuesday night completed the first half of 4A-1 Conference play, where the Lady Saints went 7-0 and did not lose a set.
