Team chemistry was a major talking point throughout coach Meagan Thompson’s first season at Springdale.

A year later, she feels her Lady Red’Dogs are a stronger team thanks to a year of familiarity and offseason experience.

“I feel like our chemistry is a lot better, and even being with me for a full year,” Thompson said. “I know my players really well, and they know each other better and they have more trust. The chemistry on the court is just better, and last year that’s something we kind of struggled with.”

Another reason for optimism this year is returning production. KeKe Turner, who … Continue Reading ››

Springdale Har-Ber coach Shyrah Schisler graduated 12 players from a strong senior class after last season’s state finals run – a hit that could set some programs back.

Schisler doesn’t believe that to be the case with hers.

Har-Ber won 29 matches last season by mid-October and finished with a school-record 32 in 2016 before falling to Fayetteville in the state finals. Schisler’s previous two teams set the bar high, but the coach says this group has the same expectations for itself as play opens tonight.

“I think we have young personnel, but personnel that has the same (goals),” Schisler said. “People will … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville West's volleyball team may have caught some by surprise when its inaugural season was capped by a trip to the Class 7A state tournament.

While the Lady Wolverines cherished the moment at the time, it just meant the stakes were raised a little higher for the second season.

"Making it into the state tournament in our first year was good for us," West coach Julie Rowan said. "So now, they've been talking about not having that sophomore slump. Last year, Everything positive was positive. Unfortunately, this year the expectation is so much higher.

"We can't use the excuse … Continue Reading ››

The battle cry for Bentonville High's volleyball team this season can be found on the top of the Lady Tigers' schedule.

It simply reads "Unfinished Business," and coach Michelle Smith traces its origin to the end of last season, when Bentonville suffered a second-round loss to North Little Rock in the Class 7A state tournament.

"Our seniors didn't have the season last year that they felt they should have had," Smith said. "We underachieved a lot of times. As a coaching staff, we pulled out all the stops, and we were dumbfounded at the state tournament. We were speechless and … Continue Reading ››
