Bentonville has made its move toward becoming the first school to win the MaxPreps Cup — which is awarded to the nation's best high school athletic program — for a second consecutive year. Bentonville-TigersBentonville, which was in a tie for second place through the fall sports season, now has 818 points after the winter sports have been tabulated. Defending MaxPreps Cup champion Bentonville is in a tie for second place in the 2014-15 standings through the fall sports. Raleigh (N.C.) Cardinal Gibbons is in the lead with 628 points, while Bentonville and Carmel, Ind., both have 580 points. Hindsdale (Ill.) Central and Sioux Falls (S.D) Lincoln round out the top five with 530 and 468 points, respectively. The MaxPreps Cup standings are tabulated by ranking all schools that win a state championship or finish second at the state (or section level if there is no state competition) finals. Bentonville senior golfers Hanna Brauburger and Wade Schaller took top honors Tuesday in the  Golf to Paradise—First Tee Champions Challenge in Naples, Fla.

The pair went on to compete in the ACE Group Classic Official Pro-Am Wednesday at TwinEagles Golf Club. Brauburger and Schaller were part of a foursome that won the Pro-Am with an official score of 51. Brauburger also won the Women’s Long Drive competition for the day.

Wrong Golf Score Works In Bentonville’s Favor

The final scorecard at Centennial Valley Golf Course in Conway made it appear that Bentonville's boys would have to settle for a second-place finish at the Conway Invitational Tournament.

That all changed after a 45-minute discussion, and the Tigers were able to claim the team title during Saturday's tournament. Bentonville had a 320 team score, followed by Conway with 325 and Little Rock Catholic with 326.

Bentonville High School was a runaway winner of the 2013-14 CBS MaxPreps Cup, which recognizes the nation's best overall high school sports program.

I had the opportunity Friday morning to spend a couple of hours in Farmington, where I spoke with athletic director Brad Blew and coaches Mike Adams, Beau Thompson and Brad Johnson about the school's upcoming move to Class 5A status. Farmington has played its final game in the 4A-1 Conference and will be a member of the 5A-West Conference when classes resume in August.
