Here's the preseason edition of the 7A-West Conference boys basketball power rankings.

Springdale guards Kierra Lang and Chris Owens.
Here are 20 predictions for the upcoming Springdale High basketball season, split into boys and girls sections.

BOYS

1. Chris Owens will average more than 18 points per game.

He averaged 12.6 last year, but almost 16 down the stretch of the season. So 18 should be very doable with him becoming the undisputed focal point of the offense. He could wind up pushing 20 per.

2. Tyler Tutt will make more than 35 3-pointers.

Expect Tutt to be much more … Continue Reading ››

The early signing period began Wednesday, but Springdale High’s Chris Owens won’t sign until the spring.

The 6-foot-3 senior guard is weighing options as the start of his senior season approaches.

He holds offers from Oral Roberts and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. He is also receiving interest from Southeast Missouri State, Central Arkansas, Tulsa, Southern Illinois, Mercer, Texas State, Denver and several other programs.

“If I wait until then I can see everything on the table, see all my opportunities,” Owens said.

Owens averaged a team-high 12.6 … Continue Reading ››

ROGERS — Rogers Heritage used a third-quarter 3-point barrage to pull away from Gentry en route to a 55-44 win over the Lady Pioneers in a senior girls basketball benefit game Tuesday night in War Eagle Arena.

Senior Emilie Jobst poured in a game-high 24 points, but she and teammate Sara Giesen combined to hit five 3-pointers in a 15-5 Heritage run to take control in the third quarter.

Gentry’s Rachel Lawrence drilled one of her five 3-pointers to start the second half and pull the Lady Pioneers into a 24-24 tie. But Jobst and Giesen took over to help Heritage pull away.

The 7A-West will be a deep, competitive league this season, thanks in large part to a wealth of talented perimeter players in the conference.

Here’s a look at some of the best.

1. MALIK MONK

Bentonville — Junior — 6-4

No. 1 is a no-brainer when he’s a consensus top-10 player nationally.
