Two of Arkansas' top basketball players took the court in Bentonville Thursday night.

In the girls' game, Conway's Jordan Danberry scored a career-high 37 points in the Wampus Cats' 92-89 overtime win over Bentonville.

After scoring 16 first-half points, the Arkansas commit began the second half with a pair of air balls, forcing Conway head coach Ashley Nance to pull her out of the game.

The four-minute break paid off, as Danberry scored five points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth.

Her 14-point second half included a three-pointer under the one-minute mark and a pair of free throws that tied the … Continue Reading ››

BENTONVILLE — Jason McMahan just wanted Bentonville's boys basketball team to go out and have a little fun during Thursday's benefit game against Conway.

Malik Monk listened and provided most of the first-half thrills as the Tigers rolled to a 76-55 victory in Tiger Arena. Monk scored 21 of his 25 points in the first half, including an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Trent Carter and another breakaway slam.

"That's obviously what he can do so well: attack and get to the basket," McMahan said. "Our offense starts with him."

Conway did manage to keep things close throughout the first half as … Continue Reading ››

Springdale senior guard Tyler Tutt.
Here are tidbits from my notebook from Springdale High’s 68-39 win over Shiloh Christian in its season opener.

  • Springdale played really well for about 20 minutes in this one, not so great in the second quarter and first four minutes of the third. But all in all, it was a solid performance for a season opener and provided glimpses of what this team can be.

  • Senior Chris Owens was dominant on the offensive end. He made his game-high 24 points look easy. And he … Continue Reading ››

Springdale's Chris Owens scored a game-high 24 points against Shiloh Christian.
SPRINGDALE — Springdale High senior all-state guard Chris Owens scored a game-high 24 points to spark the Bulldogs to a convincing 68-39 season-opening win over Shiloh Christian in Bulldog Gym.

Owens was assertive and efficient on the offensive end, hitting 9 of 17 shots to lead a Springdale team that returns only three contributors from its state runner-up team a year ago.

Owens scored 13 of his points in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs (1-0) jumped out to … Continue Reading ››

Fayetteville guard Payton Willis.
Here's the preseason edition of the 7A-West Conference boys basketball power rankings.

Should be a tight race between the top five teams. Wouldn’t be a shock if they all finished with eight to 11 conference wins and the race came down to the wire. Ties are no fun for power rankings, but it’s not hard to envision a logjam of tied teams when it’s all said and done.

But anyway. … These rankings will be updated periodically during the nonconference portion of the schedule and then on a … Continue Reading ››

Springdale guards Kierra Lang and Chris Owens.
Here are 20 predictions for the upcoming Springdale High basketball season, split into boys and girls sections.

BOYS

1. Chris Owens will average more than 18 points per game.

He averaged 12.6 last year, but almost 16 down the stretch of the season. So 18 should be very doable with him becoming the undisputed focal point of the offense. He could wind up pushing 20 per.

2. Tyler Tutt will make more than 35 3-pointers.

Expect Tutt to be much more … Continue Reading ››

Springdale got off to a quick start, forcing 10 first-quarter turnovers en route to a 30-7 lead after one. The Lady Bulldogs substituted freely in both halves, mass subbing groups of five and playing every player on the roster … Continue Reading ››
