COACH John Marshall
LAST YEAR’S RECORD This is the Wolverines’ inaugural season.
KEY PLAYERS F Tyler Guentz (Jr.), D Ethan Stockdale (Soph.), MF George Shultz (Jr.), GK Joel Garcia (Jr.).
TOP NEWCOMERS MF Tom Shultz (Fr.), M Brayden Douthit (Soph.), MF/F Blake McDoulett (Soph.).
THE SKINNY Marshall, a former head coach at Springdale Har-Ber, returns to the ranks after spending last year as an assistant for Bentonville’s girls team. He inherits four players that did see playing time at Bentonville last year in Guentz, Stockdale, Shultz and Garcia. The Wolverines are already off to a good start with a 3-0 victory over Green Forest as Guentz scored twice and Blake McDoulett added another.
Marshall said having the ball the majority of the time is a key facet of his style of play and attack as much as possible. He believes he has enough experienced players from last year’s Bentonville team to combine with the young players he has and made a formidable team.
West, however, will be tested early. The Wolverines open the season with six matches in an eight-day span, with teams such as Fort Smith Northside and defending Class 6A state champion Siloam Springs, before starting conference play the following week.
“We just wanted to get into it and see what we could do,” Marshall said. “I don’t think we looked into anything special. We just wanted to play as many games as we can.
“We just wanted to get into the fire of things and let these young guys know what it is to be able to compete in the conference.”
KEY DATES March 3 — first stiff test at Fort Smith Northside. March 14 — first 7A-West Conference match at Van Buren; April 11 — first match against rival Bentonville High.
