Darrell Henry didn't stay retired long from coaching. The former Fort Smith Northside head coach is the defensive coordinator at Van Buren, where he'll begin his second year. Henry accepted an offer from Pointers head coach Brooks Coatney after Henry resigned in 2012 from Northside, where he coached for 11 years. He was on the sideline with the Pointers Friday during the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase … Continue Reading ››

Har-Ber Soccer At Crossroads

Hiring baseball coaches at Har-Ber and Springdale High aren't the only decisions facing administrators at Springdale. Har-Ber must replace boys soccer coach Nelson Medina, who took over a losing program as a volunteer and showed the Wildcats how to win. Har-Ber got lucky with Medina, a former college and pro player, who had moved to the area after meeting his wife, who is from Prairie Grove. Medina was voted NWA Media Coach of the Year after leading Har-Ber to a 7-0 record in 7A/6A-West Conference play in his first season. He then led Har-Ber into the Class 7A state championship last month, … Continue Reading ››

Har-Ber Benefits From Makeup Game

Springdale Har-Ber benefited from a makeup game after most teams had finished with conference play. It was against Bentonville, the team the Wildcats will challenge for the Class 7A state championship Saturday at noon at Razorback Field. Bentonville (16-0-1) used a late goal by Tolliver Davis to win 1-0 and stay unbeaten. Har-Ber coach Nelson Medina said afterward he hoped his team could use the effort as a springboard to the state tournament. That's exactly what's happened for the Wildcats, who've reached the state finals as a No. 6 seed from the West. "We had high expectations coming into the season, but it was … Continue Reading ››

Soccer Coaches Address Controversy

Boys soccer coaches in the 7A/6A-West cleared the air and presented a united front Monday following a controversy regarding buffer games for red cards. The issue came to a head last week after Springdale added a game with Harrison to absorb a red card by Orsy Gonzalez, who was sent off during a conference game with Fayetteville. The move was made to make Gonzalez eligible for its conference showdown with Springdale Har-Ber, but the Arkansas Activities Association stepped in and ruled Gonzalez ineligible for the matchup. Earlier in the year, Rogers added a game with Huntsville after two of its players received … Continue Reading ››

Arkansas, Arkansas State On SEC Network

Arkansas State can't get on the field with Arkansas, but the policy won't prevent the two schools from appearing on TV together. Arkansas State and Arkansas will appear in back-to-back games Sept. 6 when the new SEC Network televises six football games involving SEC schools. The Red Wolves will play Tennessee at 11 a.m. followed by Nicholls State (La.) at Arkansas at 3 p.m. Other games on the lineup include Florida Atlantic at Alabama at 11 a.m., Eastern Michigan at Florida at 3 p.m., Sam Houston State at LSU and Lamar at Texas A&M, both at 6:30 p.m. An overflow channel … Continue Reading ››

Bulldogs Stay Unbeaten In League Play

Fayetteville took advantage of a late breakdown from Springdale Har-Ber. The Bulldogs scored four runs without a hit in the top of the seventh inning and defeated Har-Ber 6-1 on Tuesday in 7A/6A-West Conference play at the Tyson Sports Complex. The loss wasted a fine pitching performance by Brady Patrick, a sophomore left-hander who pitched into the seventh inning. Andy Pagnozzi struck out 13 to improve to 7-0 on the season for Fayetteville. “Andy struggled early a little bit with his control,” Fayetteville coach Van Arnold said. “He started throwing his curve ball and even when he missed, he came back with it. … Continue Reading ››
