Rogers High: The Week Ahead

Like the rest of the 7A-West, the Mounties and Lady Mounties are off Tuesday before they start the second half of the league season when Springdale Har-Ber visits Friday.

The Lady Mounties (9-11, 2-5) lost at Har-Ber in overtime to start West play. Rogers lost several close games in the first half and Lady Mounties coach Preston Early is optimistic entering the final seven games.

"One of the biggest positives for us was that we were in all of our games, except one, deep into the second half," Early said. "We were one, two possessions away in all of our games except … Continue Reading ››

Weekly 7A-West Swimming Notes

Time is running short for local high school swimmers to qualify for the state meet. Bentonville is hosting a meet today at 3:30 p.m. at the Bentonville Community Center while a meet is scheduled for Feb. 4 at the Jones Center in Springdale.

The district swim and dive meet is in Bentonville Feb. 17 while the state meet is also hosted by the Tigers and Lady Tigers Feb. 26-27.

Winter weather in central Arkansas forced many schools from competition last week as a meet in Conway was cancelled. But Rogers High and Rogers Heritage both swam at the Clarksville Invitational on Tuesday.

The Rogers High Mounties and Lady Mounties will look to rebound Tuesday when Fayetteville visits King Arena. The Mounties (7-11, 1-4) and Lady Mounties (9-9, 2-3) are at Springdale High Friday night.

"We need to find a way to win one of these big games," said Lady Mounties coach Preston Early "We've been short in overtime and by nine and 10 points. That boils down to three to five possessions or plays that we aren't making. We really feel like we are that close, but we have got to grow to get to that next level that is required to … Continue Reading ››

Rogers High Recap

It was a tough week for the Rogers High girls basketball team as the Lady Mounties lost 56-47 at Fort Smith Northside and 58-48 at home to Bentonville on Friday night.

Rogers was in both games late and Lady Mounties coach Preston Early said that is something the team can build on.

"We had a chance to cut it to three one time (against Bentonville)," Early said. "We had some mini runs. We could have folded, but we fought it some. But bottom line, our defense wasn't the caliber it would take to win the game." Madison Sandor led Rogers against the Lady … Continue Reading ››

Rogers High Basketball Recap

The Rogers High girls basketball took a big step towards the postseason with wins against Rogers Heritage and Fort Smith Southside last week.

Balanced scoring was the key in both games. Samantha Brown, who didn't score against Heritage, led the Lady Mounties with 18 points against Southside.

"We were hard to score on, and that is our staple," Early said. Coach Wayne Herren said heading into the week that Rogers needed at least one victory to stay in the postseason race and the Mounties did that with a thrilling 72-68 overtime win over crosstown rival Rogers Heritage. The Mounties lost at Fort Smith … Continue Reading ››

Rogers High: The Week Ahead

Although the Rogers High Mounties and Lady Mounties have played just one 7A-West Conference game, both teams face a critical week if the season is going to extend to the post season.

Rogers hosts crosstown rival Rogers Heritage Tuesday before they travel to Fort Smith Southside Friday.

"You hate to use the word must-win early in the season," said Mounties coach Wayne Herren. "But I think it is pretty obvious that we have to find a way to win one of these games this week. It won't be the end of the season if we don't, but it will sure make it … Continue Reading ››

The Rogers High Lady Mounties just missed pulling off an upset to start the 7A-West Conference slate when they fell 46-41 to Springdale Har-Ber in overtime Friday.

Free-throw shooting was the difference in the game. Ha-Ber made 21 of 27 (78 percent) while Rogers was only 12 of 26 (46 percent) from the line. The Lady Mounties had a chance to win the game in regulation but they could not get a shot off.

“I don’t want any of our kids to feel personally responsible," Early said. "But for whatever reason, maybe we lost our confidence, we couldn’t make our free … Continue Reading ››
