Overtime allowed in nonconference games

Arkansas high school football teams will be able to play overtime periods in nonconference games this season.

A proposal to change the rule passed by a vote of 179-10 Wednesday at a meeting of the Arkansas Activities Association's governing body in Little Rock. The rule change will take place immediately.

Previously, teams were not allowed to play overtime in nonconference games, resulting in six tied outcomes last season. The rule pertained to only games played in the state,  however, meaning some Arkansas teams were involved in nonconference overtime games out of state.

The results of nonconference games don't impact postseason seeding in Arkansas.

Perrin to coach Stuttgart

Stuttgart has made its second football head coaching hire in less than a month. According to the Stuttgart Daily Leader, the Ricebirds have hired former Mineral Springs head coach Vince Perrin. The hire comes only a few weeks after the school district hired Melbourne coach Kevin McCarn, who changed his mind three days later. Perrin was 20-5 in two seasons as head coach at Mineral Springs. According to the Daily Leader he also has had assistant coaching jobs at Springdale, Alma, Greenwood, Arkadelphia, Bearden, Hot Springs Lakeside and Clinton. Reports: Gragg transferring to Dumas

PINE BLUFF AT BRYANT The state's top football recruit is transferring. Tight end Will Gragg will play his senior season at Class 4A Dumas, where his father, Kelvin, was recently named superintendent, according to reports. Gragg is leaving Class 6A Pine Bluff, where he helped the Zebras to a state runner-up finish as a junior. Gragg caught 36 passes for 367 yards and 6 touchdowns as a junior. Barbaree resigns at Carlisle

One of the state's top small school programs is looking for a new football coach. Brandon Barabaree has resigned after only one season coaching the Bison, according to multiple reports. Former Arkansas Democrat-Gazette high school football reporter Robert Yates reported on Twitter that Barbaree will accept the middle school principal job in Pangburn. The Bison were 12-2 last season and reached the semifinals of the Class 2A playoffs. Carlisle beat Marked Tree, Conway Christian and Rison in the postseason before a 38-23 loss to eventual state champion Junction City. Carlisle has won 76 games over the last seven seasons.

Pettway picks Ole Miss

IMG_4564 One of the state's top recruits committed to the University of Mississippi on Wednesday. LaMichael Pettway, a rising senior receiver from Nashville, confirmed his decision to Arkansas Democrat-Gazette recruiting editor Richard Davenport. Pettway had at least 10 scholarship offers, including ones from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ohio State, Nebraska and Arkansas. Pettway caught 56 passes for 1,056 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior for the Scrappers. He also completed 11 of 33 passes for 5 touchdowns and ran for a pair of scores.
