Arkansas Basketball Report 2.2.17

The dunk heard ’round The Worldwide Leader in Sports (aka ESPN) came from Jonesboro junior Desi Sills, a Class of 2018 Arkansas Razorbacks pledge.

The 6-foot-2 point guard dunked over a Forest City player during a Hurricane win last Tuesday. He also scored 31 points during the victory.

The original video, captured by a perfectly positioned Jason Hurst of KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, was picked up and retweeted by several outlets, including ESPN along with the tweet below, It also made SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays:

The video has been retweeted and shared thousands of times, so Sills has made an even bigger name for himself than he already had while helping lead the undefeated and nationally-ranked Jonesboro squad.

Sills posted a couple of cool still shots from the dunk, via @PhotosbyPTP:

Then, Sills offered up his own thoughts, or lack thereof, about the dunk:

Battle of Bigs

El Dorado’s Daniel Gafford, a 2017 Razorbacks signee, came out on the winning end of matchups against two future Division-I players this past week.

Gafford had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots in Tuesday’s 88-50 win over Hot Springs and Louisiana Tech signee Exavian Christon, who had 15 points.

On Saturday, Gafford was named Most Valuable Player after a monster outing during the Hotbed Classic. He had 25 points, 20 rebounds, 8 steals and 6 blocks, including four against Mississippi State signee Garrison Brooks of Auburn, Ala. Brooks hit just 4 of 13 shots and was limited to 10 points and six rebounds.

Kevin McPherson, who tweets from the account @ARHoopScoop, attended the games in Mississippi:

Re-Rivalry Games

On Tuesday, North Little Rock’s girls snapped Little Rock Central’s nine-game winning streak by rallying for a 64-56 win at Tiger Fieldhouse. The Charging Wildcats trailed by nine points (42-33) midway through the third quarter but closed out the game with a 33-14 scoring advantage.

Amber Hawkinson and Mackenzie Tillman combined for 33 points for North Little Rock while sophomore Jordan Greenwood finished with 18 points to lead four Central players in double figures.

It was such an entertaining game they’ll hook up for an encore Thursday night in North Little Rock.

Then There Were Three …

Nettleton is home to the state’s lone undefeated girls team in the state after West Fork lost to Gentry on Friday. The Lady Raiders are 22-0 and are led by sophomores Mya Love and Dasia Young. Love averages a team-high 13 points per game while Young pulls down more than seven rebounds per game.

The West Fork Lady Tigers were without senior guard Shannon Throgmorton in the loss, but bounced back to defeat Gravette — a team that had won six straight and 10 of its previous 11 games — on Tuesday.

Two boys teams — 6A Jonesboro and 2A Cutter Morning Star — remain undefeated.
