FAYETTEVILLE – Tye Brown’s two-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth gave Star City its first baseball state championship in school history Friday.
The play beat Arkadelphia 4-3 and ended the Badgers’ quest for a third straight state title.
Arkadelphia got on the board first, with an RBI double by Austin Bethell in the second, but the Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
Austin Powell’s RBI single tied the game, then William Wynn scored on a wild pitch to take the lead.
The lead lasted until the fifth, when Brooks Burnham and Clay Wilson each had an RBI hit.
It was a short-lived lead for Arkadelphia, though. The Bulldogs tied it up in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a perfect squeeze bunt by Garry Hill.
Hill also started on the mound for Star City, throwing eight innings and allowing just three earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out six.
