4 Downs With Shiloh Christian RB Chandler Smith

I caught up with Shiloh Christian rising senior Chandler Smith (OK, he was sitting down), on Friday at the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase.

Shiloh 7-on-7

Smith has played on the Saints’ varsity for four seasons. Last season he was injured late and missed Shiloh Christian’s playoff game and was held out of spring contact drills.  He has since been cleared and has participated in all the Saints’ team camps and 7-on-7s this summer.

First Down: How is your shoulder?

It’s doing good. It’s completely healed. It was separated and I tore my labrum, and I tore just about everything in my shoulder.  But it’s good now.  I’m definitely ready to hit somebody.

Second Down: After missing the the end of the season and the playoff game, are you anxious to put that behind you and move into the 4A-1 Conference?

I am. I’ve never actually played in a playoff game we’ve won.

Third Down: How are the players adapting to new coach Jeff Conaway’s system?

We love coach Conaway.  He runs a lot of the similar stuff as Coach Floyd. He’s done a good job of meshing it together.  We haven’t had to learn a lot, but neither has he. He’s just a great leader and a great guy.

Fourth Down: How much does 7-on-7 really help prepare a team for the season?

I think it helps the receivers. It helps them in running their routes and for the defense, it helps in the coverages. Then you can add in the hitting and the tackling.
